Description
A wonderful Sumerian limestone figurine of a lion, Early Dynastic Period, c. 2900 - 2350 BC, in recumbent pose with paws forward and ears alert. Nicely carved in naturalistic style with drilled eyes and incised detail. L: 2 1/4 in (5.8 cm). A rare and attractive piece with excellent mineral deposits. Similar lions figurines have been found buried in temple foundations. For example a similar example was found at the White Temple of Uruk III. 9Erlenmeyer, p. 38); Ex David Liebert collection.
