Robert Kemm was, like many other contemporary painters of his time, influenced by the literary movement of ‘costumbrismo’, which describes the customs of Spanish society. The pictorial representation of regional characters was coined mainly by Valeriano Dominguez Bécquer. The paintings of the ‘Costumbristas’ that denote particularly 19th century genre scenes in Spain feature both romantic and realistic style elements.
Condition:
The painting is in color fresh condition. The canvas has been relined. There are several patches on the reverse. The paint surface shows craquelure and some paint losses, especially to the lower margin. The inspection under UV light reveals numerous, especially crack filling strokes of retouching to the figures, as well as touch-ups to the upper left and the margins. The varnish has been renewed. The frame shows minor material losses.
Robert Kemm (1837-1895)
Like other painters of his country, including John Philip, Edwin Long and John Bagnold Burgess, the London-born Robert Kemm traveled to Spain, especially to Andalusia. He painted genre scenes with Toreros, beggars and guitarists, often depicted in the historic center of Seville. (cko)
