Depiction of a woman in her daily work driving her loaded boat: The painting, which is characterized by the high narrow size, belongs to a series of works by the artist, presenting working-class women such as wash-, fish- and boatwomen.
Condition:
The painting is in good condition consistent with the age, slightly discolored and with tiny holes to the edges. Only a few retouched spots can be seen under UV light at the upper edge and on the right side of the figure. The frame shows usual signs of age and wear as well as small loss of material at the upper right edge.
Eugenio Cecconi (1842-1903)
Eugenio Cecconi was an Italian painter, jurist and art critic from Livorno. The artist was member of the Tuscan artist group 'Macchiaioli' and showed his works in a lot of exhibitions. Cecconi dedicated himself primarily to landscapes (a lot of motifs from Tuscany) and depictions of animals, but painted portraits and genre scenes as well. As an art critic he worked for English and American newspapers. (msc)
