Condition:
The painting has darkened somewhat and shows rubbing in part. The canvas has been laid on hardboard. The signature has been repainted. The varnish has been renewed. The frame is slightly chipped.
Ludwig Munthe (1841-1896)
The Norwegian painter Ludwig Munthe was first a pupil of Franz Wilhelm Schiertz in Bergen. Beginning in 1861, he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy, yet he was trained mainly self-taught. With predilection he painted beach scenes with fishermen and melancholic winter landscapes with a broad horizon in the surroundings of Düsseldorf. Munthe’s works can be found at the Oslo National Gallery, the National Museum in Stockholm, the National Gallery in Berlin, and the Kunsthalle in Mannheim, amongst others. (cko)
