Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Huari-Wari / Chancay transitional, ca. 700 to 1470 CE. A pair of standing, hollow bichrome pottery, anthropomorphic male and female figures with arms held over their chests, large rounded heads with expressive visages comprised of round eyes in low relief, arched brows in low relief, pointy noses in high relief, small applied ears, and elaborate face paint or tattoo marks. Both are nude with delineated genitalia, except for their painted beaded necklaces, extensive body paint or tattoo markings, and magnificent headdresses - his with painted dots and sinous motifs in cream on a red ground as well as horn-like points emerging from it, hers of a fan-like form with radiating red and white stripes that are further decorated with painted dots of the complementing hue. Both laterally perforated for attachment or suspension. A marvelous pair of anthropomorphic ceramic figures from the ancients of the Andes. Rare to find a matching male and female pairing!
