Near East, Sasanian Empire, Iran / Iraq / Turkey, ca. 3rd or 4th Century BCE. A hollow cast bronze partial figure, perhaps part of a dagger handle, depicting a king holding a curved sword in his left hand. He wears a high dome ribbed helmet and pleated garments with a belt around his waist. He has long, tightly curled hair and a beard. This figure is not a king - he lacks the crown and elaborate jeweled harness that was an emblem of Sasanian royalty - but he is undoubtedly an important person, possibly a military leader or one of the warrior priests that the Zoroastrianism of the Empire required to have as part of their military. The Sasanian Empire was a major force in Persia, vying for control with the Romans and later Byzantium. Their bronze and other metalwork was also renowned, and the artistry of this piece is clear. When they were conquered by Islamic forces in the seventh century, their artisans began to work for new rulers and are the reason why Persian themes have a great influence on Islamic art.
