Ornamented in high relief over two rings, the upper vase depicts various scenes from the Bhagavata Purana, and the lower with the Churning of the Milky Ocean
Lid ornamented with figure of Krishna standing and fluting next to a cow
Floral pattern circles the neck of the vase

Very good condition
A repoussé silver lidded vase richly ornamented with various allegorical scenes. Top knob is shaped as a Krishna, and the lid is surrounded by dancing Gopis (cow maidens) and gopas (cowherds). The vase is adorned with two registered landscape, upper with the Bhagavata Purana; the various avatars of Vishnu, featuring Matsya Avatar (the Fish avatar) battles Shankasura, Varaha (the Boar) Avatar battles Hiranyaksha, Narasimha (the Man-Lion) Avatar kills Hiranyakasipu, and a Royal Couple. Depicted in lower register is the Churning of the Milky Ocean. The Gods, including Shiva, Vishnu, Ganesh, Brahma and others, pull the tail of the Serpent Vasuki in a cosmic tug of war with the asuras (demons). Vasuki is wrapped around Mount Mandara supported by Kurma the tortoise churning the Cosmic Ocean to produce Amrita - the nectar of the gods - which emerges in the form of animals and auspicious objects.
Condition
The silver vase and cover are in overall very good condition with a patina and some tarnish. There are some scuffs and light surface indentations to the silver, though very minor. With the lid, the vase is 17 ¾ inches (45.1 cm.) in height.
