Description
[Slavery/Glorious Revolution] IN COMMEMORATION OF THE CENTENARY OF THE REVOLUTION engraving.
Shows a slave kneeling in front of a woman holding a cat o’nine tails. At her feet are books labeled “Disp. Power” and “Nonresis” with the last 5 letters of “nonresistance” omitted. Next to the woman is a sheet labeled “Bill of Rights.” Behind the slave are a British lion and a woman with a spear and shield. The “Revolution” in the title is the Glorious Revolution (1688), when William of Orange (later King William III) overthrew James II using 11,000 mostly Dutch men, carried across the Channel by a fleet of ships funded by the States of Holland. The Bill of Rights depicted in the engraving was the act of Parliament, not the bills of rights in state constitutions. Also behind the slave is an obelisk labeled “MCCXV/ Fitzwalter/ Hampden/ Russel/ Sidney/ MDCLXXXVIII.” Lower margin: “Published Nov. 15, 1788, by W. Bent, London.”
Image: 5 ¼ x 3 5/8 in. Sheet 8 ½ x 4 ¾ in. Mat burn. Verso’s upper edge has 2 hinging bits. Otherwise near fine.
