[President George Washington]. Cut signatures of George Washington with Edmund Randolph’s signature below.
Signed “G. Washington” and “Edm: Randolph.” Countersignature is not legible, but might be “Countersigned “Arch Engle.” 3 x 9 ½ in. (nd). The words “By the President” are printed between George Washington and Edmund Randolph’s signatures. Randolph was a delegate to the Continental Congress (briefly in 1779 and again 1780-1782), and a delegate to the Constitutional Convention. Attorney General 1789-1793. Randolph was Secretary of State Jan. 2, 1794 until in 1795, when he resigned during the furor over the Jay Treaty. Repairs to verso (corresponding to a fold and a tape strip to the verso’s right edge), 2 tiny hinging bits to verso. The seal from the original document is mounted to the right portion of the verso. Toned. ++ With original ink drawing (silhouette on paper), signed “T. F. 1807.” Silhouette about 2 ¾ x 2 in. on 5 x 4 in. sheet. Handwritten on silhouette’s verso: “Signed by the artist in their presence. Paper taken from part of letter/ 1807.”
