A brass bound rosewood cased two-day marine chronometer Alexander Cairns, Liverpool, third quarter of the 19th century The circular four pillar single fusee movement with Harrison's maintaining power, incomplete Earnshaw type spring detent escapement and split bimetallic balance with cylindrical compensating weights, the backplate with spring set-up ratchet and steel pillar and backcock securing screws , the 3.75 inch circular silvered brass Roman numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial, up/down register and signed Alex r Cairns, 13 Waterloo Road, Liverpool, No. 1029 to centre, secured by a screw-down bezel into a brass bowl with shuttered winding hole to underside and mounted via gimbals into the rosewood three tier box centred with shaped brass name plaque to the top tier over front applied with rectangular ivory plate inscribed ALEX R CAIRNS, 13 Waterloo Road, Liverpool above button engraved 1029, the sides with brass carrying handles, the corners with brass caps and angles inset with reinforcement straps, (movement incomplete and part dis-assembled), 18cm (7ins) wide. Alexander Cairns is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working from Waterloo Road, Liverpool, circa 1850-70.
