Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a very unique shaft tomb figure. A woman with some kind of physical deformity sits, one hand at her skirt, the other holding a bowl; she wears a wizard-like conical hat and very large earrings, bracelets, and a nose ring. Painted decorations highlight her necklaces and the decoration of her skirt. There is a clear tradition in Mesoamerican art of human figures who have some physical disability; common examples are dwarves and conjoined twins. Figures like these highlight that disabled people lived and thrived in the past, while also providing interesting data about past medical conditions. Size: 6" W x 8.9" H (15.2 cm x 22.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex - private LA County collection acquired before 1990
