Description
Eastern Greek world, ca. 300 BCE. A fine handmade pottery figure showing a reclining man with chevron-decorated robes and wonderful coiffure and facial hair. He lounges, legs crossed, with one hand on his thigh and the other holding some kind of implement - food? A cup? The banquet was one of the most frequently-depicted activities in Greek art - a pan-Greek tradition of opulent eating and drinking alongside music, dance, poetry, and conversation; it also had its roots in the Near East, as described in the Old Testament: "You loll on beds inlaid with ivory/and lounge on your couches;/you feast on lambs from the flock… you improvise on the lute… you drink wine by the bowlful/and anoint yourself with the richest of oils" (Amos 6: 4-6). Size: 5" L x 3.25" H (12.7 cm x 8.3 cm)
