Description
French, likely 17th century. A vertically oriented hand woven and embroidered Renaissance silk fragment, likely from a chasuble, with a central heraldic crest with an eagle or phoenix on one side and blue and yellow horizontal stripes on the other, set on red velvet, with three urns, each encircled by scrolled foliates and leaves with metallic threads, with a later metallic threaded brocade border and fleur-de-lis corners, applied to a red velvet background with a foliated brocade border. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 75.5", width 52".
Condition
Visible wear throughout red velvet surround, with some areas appearing scraped, crushed and thread-bare. Significant rips and tears around central embroidered section (possibly earlier attempt to cut away ornamentation and then abandoned). Scattered light discoloration commensurate with age throughout. Oxidation to metallic threadwork. Most significant separation of ornament from surround and backing at top. Border with smaller scattered loose threads and losses. Loops at top with some losses. Scattered fraying throughout. No other apparent signs of damage or loss.
