Description
Ancient Greece, Crete, Geometric, ca. 7th to 9th century BCE. Two buff terracotta votive horses, standing in alert poses with abstract, stylized bodies and beautifully appliqued adornments. One dons an elaborate bridle or hackamore over its muzzle comprised of crossed coils decorated with a circular motif as well as lavish crested headgear displaying the same decorative program. Perforations were made through the muzzle. The other wears a fanciful breastplate comprised of applied coils and circular forms. Striations are also applied to its neck. The concentric circular eyes are quite bold and expressive, and the artist took great care to delineate the mane in a pronounced crest form decorated with applied stripes. Two fabulous examples from this early ancient Greek period. Size: larger horse measures 5.25" L x 2.125" W x 4.75" H (13.3 cm x 5.4 cm x 12.1 cm)
