These two canes or walking sticks have ebonized mahogany shafts with steel ferrules and alternate gold and silver heads. Inset in each head is an Essex Crystal depiction of a dog's head done in reverse intaglio.

History: Beginning in 1860, the art of reverse intaglio designs were introduced to England by Thomas Cooke. The process involved the polishing of rock crystal into a cabochon design, painting the image in reverse on the flat edge, and backing it in gold foil or mother of pearl. The art remained popular for over sixty years.
