Description
This iron cane or walking stick has a hardwood topper in the shape of a shepherd's crook. Along the length of the can is a three-pronged folding chair with a leather seat. The base of the cane has a circlet that serves as a balance when the ferrule is driven into the ground.

Weight (Lbs): 2.25
Height (In.): 36
Width (In.): 6.5
Depth (In.): 4.5
Size: 325.5 x 4.0 x 4.0"

Provenance:
Condition: Some wear and rubbing along the sides of the leather, rust and losses to the black finish on the cane body. Dirt build-up on the ferrule.
History: Canes were a popular accessory to the fashion minded far more than as an actual ambulatory aid during the 18th and 19th Centuries, dying out as a stable by the early 20th Century. Interestingly, the size of the ferrule, the metal cap on the base of a cane, is a fairly accurate measure of dating the cane, as by the 18th century, it began to shorten with the advent of maintained road systems and paved paths.
