This portrait piece depicts an elderly white male in 3/4 profile. The subject is examining a lump of ore through a magnifying glass, looking down his nose through heavily lidded eyes. Heavy wrinkles, a receding hairline, hollow cheeks, and the beginnings of liver spots mark his age. Signature in upper left beside subject "Q. Becker 1875 Berlin"

History: B. 1830 - D. 1896 From the Catalogue of the Art Collection Formed by the Late Mrs. Mary J. Morgan: "Born October 22, 1830, at Berlin. From his frequently painting cows, he came to be called Kuh-Becker (Cow-Becker), a jest which he himself accepted by signing his pictures "Q. Becker."
