Publisher's cloth, binding pulled and broken with some attempts to repairs, spine chipped and torn but pieces present and laid in, a few leaves with frayed edges and some detached or loose leaves, but contents are generally clean. First edition and apparently a mixed first state: With the first issue engraving on page 441 with Twain's head in flames (later changed at the behest of Twain's wife who found this image to be disturbing), but with the engraving on 443 properly captioned "The St. Charles Hotel." ****** 2: ROUGHING IT. Hartford: American Publishing Company, 1872. 591 pp. (ads on 592), plates. Publisher's gilt-stamped cloth, front board detached, spine strip detached (present and laid in at front), a few detached leaves at front and back, contents with occasional minor stains, toning. First edition, first state (per BAL 3337.) ****** 3: GILDED AGE, A TALE OF TO-DAY. Hartford: American Publishing Company, 1874. Publisher's cloth, spine detached and lacking and other wear to cloth, contents generally clean with some minor stains.
