Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An endearing terracotta effigy whistle in the form of a frog or 'rana' - the animal associated with water, rain, the sustenance that it provides, and by extension, fertility - and yet it also possesses a tail. Perhaps this piece represents a tadpole becoming a frog. How special, a Pre-Columbian musical instrument that depicts a milestone in this amphibian creature's life cycle! Size: 4" L x 3" W (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm)
