Item Details
Description
Prehistoric Southwestern USA, pre-1500 CE. This is a finely formed lithic made of light brown chert and knapped into the form of a wide-armed swastika. This symbol has been used by Native American tribes, especially those of the Southwest, since the prehistoric period; these are meant to represent the cardinal directions and are also known as "whirling logs". The heritage of this symbol continued until quite recently; for example, yellow swastikas on a red background marked the 45th Infantry Division (a unit from Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma with a high percentage of Native Americans) prior to the adoption of the symbol by the Nazis in 1933, when the division replaced it with the Thunderbird. Size: 2.5" W x 2.1" H (6.4 cm x 5.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
