Description
** A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit The Fowler Museum at UCLA **
Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid-20th century CE. A vintage Mexican folk art church, attributed to Isabella DeMayo, this lovely polychrome pottery model of a Spanish Colonial church with twin spires topped by crosses, a third cross atop the back of the model, two birds alighting beside each turret and a bright yellow flower atop the central section of the roof, all glazed in beautiful hues of russet red, blue-green, and golden yellow, with Baroque elements derived from Spain. Spanish Colonial architecture inspired awe amongst the indigenous of the Americas, and new churches and mission buildings, usually centrally located on higher ground for maximum effect, were erected in attempts to Hispanicize the native populations. A wonderful piece for its folk art style and meaningful iconography! Size: 5.75" W x 10.25" H (14.6 cm x 26 cm)
Provenance: Ex-private Morgan collection, Santa Monica, CA
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
