Description
Veracruz Remojadas smiling restrained figure from Mexico, ca. 500-800 A.D. These figures are relatively rare and were made with amazingly strict standards. It depicts a male on a platform/swing with hands and feet touching/restrained on heavy duty frame, mouth and nose are covered with a mask or jaguar pelt. Wearing large ear spools, elaborate feathered headdress, necklace and large cape. Several theories have been put forward on these figures including a joyful ride on a swing, a shaman in a hallucinogenic trance, Xipe Totec cult(meaning a priest is wearing the skin/mask of a deceased enemy in a ceremony), and it could be a prisoner who is being dressed up and mocked.
