Belle Epoch Circa 1890-1910 British, French, Belgian or European School Impressionist Canal Cottages Painting in the Manner of Edward Brian Seago and Sir Frank Brangwyn, oil on canvas, 22 inches x 27 3/4 inches (27 x 32 3/4 x 2 1/4 overall, framed), no visible signature, titled faintly but fairly distinctly what appears to be Bruges together with other adjacent illegible inscriptions in pencil on period European stretchers verso, additionally numbered and inscribed on reverse of frame. Original or period fin de siècle gilt gesso frame.

Note: This painting was recently sold by a FL estate seller identified as Venice, Italy of a Venetian Canal. The provenance was listed as Collection of Robert Eigelberger, Casa Phippsberger, Palm Beach, Florida. When we first saw the work it reminded us of Seago compositions of Venice however upon closer inspection of the rear inscription and the architecture we believe the work depicts Bruges. Interestingly, although Bruges is better known for being depicted by artists such as Frank Brangwyn as well as French Impressionists, Sothebys sold a work on paper by Seago identified as Bruges in the early 1990s.

About Casa Phippsberger, the Fla. home of the Phipps family of Long Island's Old Westbury Gardens:

In Palm Beach, where escapist landscapes borrowed from English rose gardens, French parterres, Spanish cloisters and Tuscan courtyards amplify the surreal allure of streets lined with imported architectural facades, Casa Phippsberger’s tropical splendor is a welcome relief, a six-acre sanctuary...As Old Westbury Gardens, the John S. Phipps family’s Long Island estate, represents a refined expression of English architecture and landscape, what remains of Casa Bendita, the family’s ocean-to-lake Palm Beach property now known as Casa Phippsberger, has evolved into a noteworthy botanical landmark, its distinctive aesthetic reinvented by Robert Eigelberger, a historic preservationist, and his wife, sculptor Susan Phipps Cochran, Phipps’ granddaughter and a fourth-generation Palm Beacher. By reimagining their ensemble of architecture, landscape and art, Phipps and Eigelberger have made yesterday’s Palm Beach as viable today as it was a century ago when Phipps’ great-grandfather, Henry Phipps, first bought the island property...Indeed, between Mountain Lakes Colony and Bok Gardens, Frederick Law Olmsted’s luscious Central Florida landscape, and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, William Lyman Phillips’ quintessential South Florida sanctuary, there are few, if any, private residences that rival Casa Phippsberger’s significant assemblage of plants and trees transformed into a horticultural kaleidoscope. --Edited from Augustus Mayhew in New York Social Diary, March 29, 2009
