Latin America, Bolivia, ca. mid-20th century CE. A papier mache deer helmet mask created for La Diablada or Danza de los Diablos (Dance of the Devils), the details hand painted in dramatic hues, the ground covered with a golden velveteen fabric. Animals are regarded as sacred in Uru mythology which is reflected in the symbolism of La Diablada. The visage of this deer is quite expressive with its bulging blue eyes, pink lids and arched brows over eye slits for the wearer, long, pointy, and perky pink and red ears, protruding snout presenting a large black nose with flaring nostrils, an open mouth revealing intimidating teeth and fangs, and attached multi-pointed antlers. Size: 15" W x 11" H (38.1 cm x 27.9 cm)
