Title: Instructions to the Surveyor General of Oregon; Being a Manual for Field Operations
Place Published: Washington
Publisher:Gideon & Co., Printers
Date Published: 1851
Description:
vii, [1], 87 pp. (12mo) 18.3x11.5 cm (7½x4¾"), original printed wrappers, blue paper spine (possibly later?). First Edition.
Presentation copy inscribed in ink at top of front wrapper, "Geo. C. Whitney Esq with respects of J.M. Moore." This is the first official book of instructions for the conduct of land office surveys. J.M. Moore was the chief clerk of the General Land Office. Warren Heckrotte cites the reference "White, History of Rectangular Survey System. This book reproduces the text of the Instructions... The text speaks of accompanying map and diagrams; these were not however issued with the book. Kain & Baigent, The Cadastral Map in the Service of The State, in section 8.8 summarizes the US experience. The bibliography gives many references." Quite rare: OCLC/WorldCat lists only four copies, at the Huntington Library, the University of California Berkeley, Yale University, and the Multnomah County Library. The present copy with inkstamp of Frankling Institute Library to front wrapper, call numbers inked on wrapper as well, punch-hole in top corner for hanging.
