19th century Southern oil on canvas portrait of a lady, by oral history Sarah Jane Harvey Overton of Nashville (1817-1890), depicted seated holding a rose, with upswept hair and attired in a black lace trimmed dress. Unsigned. Unframed. 25 1/2" H x 31 3/4" W. Provenance: descended in subject's family; private Nashville collection. (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)
Condition
Unframed. Overall light craquelure. Some rubbing to perimeter of canvas. Professionally conserved in 1996, by Cumberland Art Conservation, label en verso. Blacklight reveals inpainting to tear/scratch on subject's cheek, scattered areas of bust and shoulders, and scattered spots in background.
