Description
Aaron Shattuck (American, 1832-1928) diminutive circular oil on canvas landscape, titled "Glimpse through the Trees" depicting fall forest setting overlooking a body of water with fall trees and white tower in the distance. Signed in lower right edge, "A.D. Shattuck 1851". Pencil titled, signed and dated "A. D. Shattuck/1851" en verso. Housed in a circular molded plaster gilt frame. Sight - 6 1/2" dia. Framed - 11 1/2" dia. Biography (Courtesy of AskArt): Aaron Draper Shattuck was active/lived in Connecticut and New Hampshire. He is known for pastoral landscape, marine, animal, and portrait painting. Shattuck was considered a 2nd generation Hudson River School painter and exhibited regularly with the artists John Kensett and Samuel Colman. His paintings range in subject from White Mountain scenes to animal pictures and he preferred to work with smaller canvases. In 1856 he was elected associate member of the National Academy, and in 1861, he was Elected to full National Academician. In addition to painting he was an inventor with several patents and a violin maker. Deteriorating eyesight forced him to quit painting around 1888. Painting overall very good condition. Blacklight does not indicate inpainting or restoration. Frame with newer gilt paint.
