Description
This is a handsome antique set of a solid sterling silver coffee pot or tea pot, together with a covered sugar bowl, both by Frank Herschede. Herschede was a renowned Cinncinnati based clockmaker, who went into business in 1877 and by 1885, had diversified into jewelry, diamonds and silver. These pieces are excellent examples of Herschede's work. Both are stamped with his name and makers mark, as well as with the words Sterling and various numbers on the underside. As you can see, both pieces have lovely forms and are beautifully decorated with lovely acanthus wreaths and a scroll like design. Neither piece is monogrammed. I believe that the pot handle, which has a very striking shape, is crafted out of ebony. Together, these pieces are fairly substantial -- weighing in at approximately 11.530 (pot) and 6.740 (sugar bowl) ounces of sterling, for a total weight of 18.27 ounces of solid sterling. The pot stands approximately 7 1/2" high to the tip of the lid, while the sugar bowl stands approximately 4 1/2" high, by 5 3/4" wide. I would say that both pieces are in overall very good antique condition, though they are in need of a cleaning and polishing. Melt value is greater than the starting price.
