Description
Tao LengYue (Chinese, 1895-1985), watercolor on paper lain to silk. A graissele hand painting with hints of light natural color, depicted a night live scene within a waterside landscape, showing group of figures on boat, pavilion, birds, and dense of forest tree beneath a full moon. Calligraphy lettering inscriptions on the upper left, followed with artist's signature and iron-red seals.
Matted on creme-brownish silk border.

Provenance:
Private collection of Mr. Chen YueQuan, born 1906. A Chinese Immigrant, Prominent businessman and private asian antiques collector in South East Asia. Also well known as “Eyeglasses Old Manâ€. During 1950 he was one of the wealthiest family of The Chen's Clan. He supported the 5th renovation of Sam Poo Kong Temple Complex, the oldest Buddhist and Taoist Temple in Semarang, Indonesia. His relationship with local government including overseas ambasadors gave him a chance to receive and or collecting numerous precious arts and artifacts. During the Indonesian Revolution Riot in 1998 many Chinese fled the country, including some of Mr. Chen’s Family. They migrated overseas. Mr Chen passed away in early year of 2000.

Born in Suzhou, Jiangsu, His original name was Shan-yong, his character name is Yong-shao, and formal name is Yong, Hong-zhai, and Ke-meng Taoist Priest. He was graduated from the Jiangsu two-chi pedagogical school. And was the professor in the art department of Yali University. In 1926, he published his own album, Chi Yuan-pei written the foreword for him.

In 1932 Chi Yuanpei set the style for him, he described its: "structure and the essences, strictly followed the tradition; the picture and the essences, however, has a unique European feeling." In 1930, Tao Lengyue settled down in Shanghai and made his living by selling his paintings. After 1949, he successively taught in the Shanghai Fuxin middle school, and the Wu-ai middle school. When his 89 years old in 1984, he joined the Shanghai artist association, and was hired for the Shanghai Culture and History museum.
