Professionally framed and matted. Robert Muller is regarded by curators, collectors and scholars as the individual who compiled the finest collection of 20th century Japanese woodblock prints in the world. After his death in April of 2003, 4000 Japanese woodblock prints were donated to the Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian. Other parts of his collection were sold. Muller's collection was the major source of prints for several books on Japanese woodblocks and his prints were exhibited all over the world. His extensive collection of Meiji, Taisho, and Showa era prints was the finest ever accumulated. It has been documented in the books Ukiyo-e Masterpieces in Western Collections: the Muller Collection (1990) and The New Wave: Twentieth Century Prints from the Robert O. Muller Collection (1993).
