Description
Indonesia, Java, early 20th century CE. A hand carved and hand painted dramatic wood mask depicting Klana, a character of the Babakan Topeng in which he is used in a series of solo Javanese dances. This type is also used in Gambuh where he portrays Panji's worst enemy. Clearly an angry and violent countenance, Klana would be the Javanese version of the Balinese Ravana from Wayang Wong. A fabulous example painted in a striking palette of natural pigments - a brick red complexion, golden crown, eyes, and teeth with black highlights and hair. Characters are incised on the back side of the crown, perhaps a signature. Size: 5.75" W x 7.25" H (14.6 cm x 18.4 cm)
