Catalogue Note: Born in Washington, D.C., Andrew John Henry Way (1826-1888) is most often identified with Baltimore, MD, where he spent the bulk of his entire career after 1858. Known for his vivid still-lifes, often featuring oysters, beer, grapes, or other fruits, Way exhibited widely in his lifetime, even winning multiple medals at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. His work is represented today in the collections of the Peabody Institute and the Shelburne Museum. The present lot, untouched and retaining its likely original frame, is a quintessential example of his work, and clearly demonstrates the artist's uncanny abilities.
