JOHN LEWIS, VIRGINIA AND KENTUCKY ASSOCIATED PIECED QUILT SQUARE, six hexagonal floral embroidered pieces surrounding a central hexagon inscribed with a four-line verse and signed by John Lewis. Housed in a shadowbox frame inscribed "For Florence Bush Lewis - This is a quilt square made by a pupil of your Great-Grandfather John Lewis of Llangollen Va. & Ky. The verse was written by him & signed by him" on backing paper. Circa 1840. 6" x 6" sight.
Excellent condition.
Catalogue Note: John Edward Lewis (1784-1858) was a highly regarded teacher, scholar, author, and mathematician. He was born at Bel-air, Spotsylvania Co., VA. His father Col. Zachary Lewis (1731-1803) was an aide to George Washington during both the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. John operated a young man's preparatory school at Bel-air, later known as the Llangollen School. In 1832 he moved with his family to Georgetown, KY where he established an academy for women. In 1834 he moved to the Frankfort area and opened his Llangollen School for young men and women of the vicinity. This quilt square was likely produced by one of his pupils at this school.
