Catalogue Note: Major George Francis VonBeck (1798-1870) was born in Alsace, France and came to New York in 1833. About 1851 he organized the Harrison Guards and became its captain. The unit was known as Company A, 20th Regiment, New York State Militia. VonBeck was promoted to Major in 1853. VonBeck was a self-made industrialist, and real estate developer; he owned a brick yard, manufactured beer, and in 1854 built the 100-room Mansion House on the waterfront in Kingston. The structure still stands today and is a vital part of the Rondout-West Strand historic district.
