Description
Early 19th century military presentation jug with cover, William Thomson, New York, 1830, having handwrought and stepped lid decorated with a three-dimensional articulated cannon, flanked by stacks of cannon balls and plunging tools laid on a pounced field. The cannon is secured to the lid with U-shaped wires and two threaded nuts. This jug has a decorative cast scrolled handle with a wide mouthed short cannon atop the corkscrew thumbpiece. There is beaded decoration throughout, including the spout. Baluster form with a circular stepped and beaded foot. Engraved in script lettering on side of body, ''Presented by...to John Constantine, Late Colonel, of the 31st Regt. of said Brig., In Testimony of his Military Services, New York, March 19th, 1830''. Scratch engraved ''N.York, 1830, 44oz, 12dwt,'' in script lettering under foot. Marked twice ''W.Thomson'' in conforming rectangular cartouche inside foot. 10-1/2''h, 9-3/4''w, 5-1/2''d. Total approximate weight 44.2 troy oz.
