STAMPED "S. BELL & SON / STRASBURG" SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed with light slip wash, "3" gallon capacity mark, tall, semi-ovoid form with two heavily incised shoulder rings, high collar, plain rim, and arched handles with medial ridge, brown-slip glazed interior. The pottery of Samuel Leonard Bell (1811-1891) and/or his sons Richard Franklin, Turner Ashby, and Charles Forrest. 1882-1905. 14 1/4" H, 8" D rim.
Hairline at base and partially up one side, rim with several shallow chips.
