Description
1888 Chicago White Stockings Albumen photo depicting the entire team with each player identified under the players' photo. Each player is dressed in street clothes and is led by Cap Anson at the top of the collage. The Photo is 10x12 and out of frame, pencil is observable on the obverse, likely notes made by the framer, or photographer. The photographer is Stevens of Chicago who operated out of the McVicker's Theater Building and specialized in cabinet photos. Stevens typical productions were small cabinet photos 4x6 or 6x8. The only example known of this pose was on a 4x6 cabinet. This photo is likely a promo variety or artists proof. The photo was printed on a thin paper using the albumen process and then affixed to a heavy card stock. It was then cut down to 10x12 and framed in a typical period frame which is how it was found in a Maine attic in the 1970's. The photo shows toning typical of an albumen photo from 1888 and is remarkably preserved. This is likely a one of a kind piece of baseball history.
