Highly regarded for his mission to destroy a captured vessel off a Tripoli harbor, he later served in the War of 1812 and the Algerian War. In the culmination of a longstanding feud, Decatur was slain in a duel with naval officer James Barron in Bladensburg, Maryland near Washington D. C. on March 22, 1820."
