Description
Byzantium, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. This is a bronze flat-hammered cross with flared arms ending in serifs. There is incised decorative hatching along the interior, as well as remains where jeweled inlays once were. This is a simple, beautiful piece that would have been carried by a priest and displayed before worshippers. Size: 5-1/2" H x 3-1/4" W; with custom stand, 7" H (14 cm x 8.3 cm; 17.8 cm).
Provenance: Ex-Private BE collection, N. Germany, acquired between 1966 - 1980.
