Description
Cyprus, Levant Iron Age II, ca. 1000 to 800 BCE. This is a beautifully simple dipper with a small pierced projection and a deep round bowl. The body has a well-burnished red slip with a thin black stripe for decoration around the exterior of the rim. The black stripe, rather than being strongly defined, fades into the red in a cloudy strip that looks like smoke hanging above a sunset. This type of red ware is sometimes referred to as Cypro-Phoenician; pottery like this was made specifically for trade, and Cyprus, situated roughly 60 miles (100 km) by sea from the coast of Syria, was well-situated to export their goods throughout the Mediterranean and Near East. Size: 6.15" W x 3.5" H (15.6 cm x 8.9 cm)
