Description
Japanese, likely late Meiji Period (1868-1912). A 15 piece earthenware Satsuma tea service, accompanied with three additional Satsuma tea service articles, comprising a tea pot, lidded sugar, lidded creamer, tea cups and saucers for five, plus an additional saucer, each with elaborate hand painted enamel decoration depicting the 8 Buddhist Immortals set within a rolling landscape with serpentine dragon(s), the teapot, creamer, and sugar with dragons molded in relief and as lid finials. Additional pieces comprise a lidless creamer and a teacup with saucer. Each piece to underside with red cartouche painted with Shimazu mon and other gilt marks. Teapot approximate height 7", spout to handle width 8.25". Sugar height 5.625", width across handles 5.25". Creamer height 5.5", spout to handle width 5.25". Saucer diameter 5.625". Teacup height 1.875", width handle to rim 4.875". Provenance: From the Estate of Channing S. Jun, M.D., Eastman, Georgia.
