Description
Chokwe people, African (Democratic Republic of Congo), Early 20th century. Hand carved and stained wood female figural sculptural bust in the form of a mwana pwo (young woman intended for marriage) with dyed and braided vegetable fiber hair accented with three cowrie shells at top, pierced slits on rounded eyes, recessed circular facial scarification (mitelumuna) accented in white kaolin clay, rounded ears with pierced hole, and smiling mouth exposing teeth. Unsigned. Overall approximate height 11.5". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Dr. & Mrs. Calvin Wayne McLarin, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: Chokwe is also sometimes spelled Tchokwe.
