Description
Continental, likely Nuristan, Afghanistan, 19th century. A hand carved wood architectural fragment converted to a console or altar table, the single slab with rectangular top over double scrolled and chip carved tapering sides, the front carved with two Nuristan stars centered with a carved panel of scrolling interlocking floral blossoms. The whole raised on a black painted iron or steel plinth on four turned feet. Approximate height 32.25", width 58.4", depth 9.5".
Condition
Structurally sound. Approximate 17 inch wide x 2.5" deep piece of wood missing from upper back left top (see image #2). There is a 5" long piece of wood missing top left front of console (see image #1). Scattered nicks, chips, gauges on top surface (see image #5 and #6). There is chip with loss to scroll carved element on back left side (see image #1). Other small losses to scroll carved elements, not distracting. Minor prior worming.
