Description
A Russian silver and champlevé enamel butler's tray, Pavel Ovchinnikov, Moscow, 1874, 91 standard. The circular tray in the Russian Style, decorated with multiple enamel panels of engraved scrolling motifs around a central stylized flowerhead, the raised border with geometric ornament, all in shades of navy blue, sky blue, translucent red, opaque white, and forest green. Diameter: 6 3/8 in. (16.2 cm). This tray is made of 91 standard silver (.948), an usually high level of purity that Ovchinnikov reserved for certain important items. Enameled items were usually made on a ground of 84 (.875) or 88 (.916) standard silver. The large range of colors, including the recently introduced translucent red, suggests that this was a particularly luxurious item in the mid-1870s.
