Description
A Russian parcel gilt silver trompe l’oeil cake basket, Moscow, circa 1885. Of circular form with swing handle, chased and repoussé in imitation of a woven basket draped with a damask napkin with fringed edge, raised on ring foot. Struck with Cyrillic initials GL, probably for Gerasim Loskutov. Height at top of handle: 5 in; width 6 1/2 in. (12.7 x 16.5 cm) Silver in this style was prized in both Russia and abroad for the master's ability to render diverse materials such as linen or woven baskets. The firm of Sazikov was known for producing many such works and Gerasim Loskutov was for some time an employee of this firm. For a similar work by Loskutov formerly in the Safra Collection, see Sotheby's New York, 18 November 2011, lot 77; for another trompe l'oeil basket, see Sotheby's New York, 14 October 2015, lot 56.
