Eastern Europe, Russia, Imperial Period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A trio of gilt silver and niello pattered teaspoons, each with foliate designs. The larger spoon contains 84% silver and a gold wash that contrasts nicely with the black niello vines. The neck is stamped with faint assay, purity, and maker marks. The dark coloration of the niello motifs results from the mixture of copper, silver, and lead sulphates that form its metallic composition. The motifs are etched into the silver surface, the powder mixture is added to the grooves then reheated to adhere to the spoon and create the black pigment. The other 2 spoons have twisted handles and the bowl verso is decorated with black niello on one and a mint green on the other. Please note that lead was used on these spoons as artisans at the time did not realize the harmful ingredient. We recommend these as pretty display pieces only.
