Northern Europe, Ireland, ca. 1737 CE. A fascinating example of legal history! An Irish mortgage agreement inscribed in ink on laid paper between John Sampson and Thomas Willson. Dating from December 14th, 1737, the document features a wax seal of a man with a sword on a horse in the bottom right, an 8 pence ink stamp in the upper left, and 3 embossed "VI Pence" stamps in the upper center. Each embossed stamp displays the motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter, the Anglo-Norman maxim "Honi soit qui mal y pense" meaning "shame on anyone who thinks evil of it." Size of paper: 7.5" W x 12" H (19 cm x 30.5 cm); of frame: 19" W x 23.5" H (48.3 cm x 59.7 cm)

Condition
Some light wrinkling to paper with small folds to corners. Three creases with minor splitting at one, but otherwise intact and in good condition with good preservation of ink. Set in modern matte and frame with suspension wire on verso for display. Has not been examined outside of glass.
