Description
A Russian Nichols & Plincke silver trophy cup in original oak case, 1846. The campana form trophy in Neo-Classical taste, part-fluted bowl below a ribbed frieze, raised on domed pedestal foot with fluted band, front applied with a chased laurel wreath surrounding the engraved motto in Latin capitals DIGNUS HONORE (Worthy of Honor), the reverse with the italic initials J&MS, struck with marks of Nichols & Plinke and workmaster's mark of silversmith Johan Frederik Falck, contained in its original silk- and velvet-lined oak case with blue label of Nichols & Plincke's Magasin Anglais, the case fitted with brass plate engraved M. Simpson. Height 9 in. (23 cm.); 834 gm. Joseph and Mary Simpson were members of an Anglo-Scottish family who were resident in St Petersburg as part of the Russian Company or British Chaplaincy throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries.
