1860 Slave Auction Broadside Charleston, South Carolina
May 7, 1860-Dated, Partially-Printed Charleston Slave Auction Broadside, measuring 7.5” x 6”, Very Fine.
Fully authentic, boldly printed and completed in deep rich brown, with some light scattered tone, original tiny tack holes at corners, left margin slightly irregular, short edge tears repaired with glassine on the blank verso from actual posting and use. Less than a year before the first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter, Eight Slaves are offered for sale on this Partially-Printed Auction Annoucement Broadside. Being an administrator's notice concerning the "Estate of William Brady, deceased," noting that his property, which included "8 valuable negroes" would be offered for public auction. This Broadside reads, in full;

“Notice. / Having qualified as administrator on the Estate of William Brady, deceased, on the 31st day of May A.D. 1860, at the dwelling of the said deceased We wil expose to public vendue, on a credit, the personal property of said deceased, consisting of the following property to wit: two mares & Colts, 8 Valuable Negroes, blacksmith tools - household and kitchen furnitures. / and other articles unneccessary to mention. Terms made known on the day of sale. All persons indebted to the Estate of said deceased are hereby notified to make immediate payment and settlement, as longer indulgence cannot be given; and all persons having claims against said estate will present them for payment within the time prescribed by law, or this notice will be plead in bar of their recovery. This the 7th day of May A.D. 1860.” - (Signed) “James Brady administrator” and “Lewis Brady.”
