(Sarah Miriam Peale, Philadelphia, PA, 1800-1885) Known as Americas first woman artist and American portrait painter, one of the notable family of artists descended from the miniaturist and still-life painter James Peale, who was her father and Mary Claypoole, who was her mother. Portrait is Identified with a period attached note "Sarah H. Melster, 29th year, 1832, Wilmington, Delaware". Image size 5" x 3-7/8", in a period gold painted frame, 8-7/8" x 7-1/2" overall.
